What happened to the days of yore when you could get a cheap lunch for around $3?
Walking around the East Village today I was kind of appalled to see that the average price of a falafel sandwich is approximately $4.75. That is not even including meat! Granted we are in the midst of a recession, and under $5 is still quite cheap, but for most of the falafel spots the size does not equal the sum of its price.
Here is a list of offenders:
Chickpea
Tahini
Maoz
That’s right, you guys are on my hitlist!
But as luck would have it, just as I was walking back home down St. Marks dejectedly, I caught a glimpse of Mamoun’s outdoor menu… and there it was…the holy grail of falafels – $2.50!!!
It was a price lower than I ever thought I would see. I didn’t sample it though, because at that point I was so overwhelmed by the idea of falafel. But next time I am caught outside with an empty stomach and an emptier wallet I’ll give you a guess where you might find me.

$4.95!
