GOOD: Customer Service

August 27, 2008 · 4 Comments

Big ups to the sales associate guy at Brooklyn Industries in the West Village yesterday afternoon!

Great customer service experiences are truly one of the most underrated joys in life.  Coming from the point of view of your average cynical New Yorker, the usual extent of employee-consumer interaction I would like to encounter is making eye-contact on my way through the door.  I prefer to be a self-sufficient shopper, and most importantly I do like to be rushed or bothered.  This shouldn’t sound aloof or snobbish, it just means that I am probably more likely to buy when I am free to follow my natural course, take my time and think about what I want and need.

That said, yesterday I had the most pleasant, uncommonly long, conversation with the sales dude in Brooklyn Industries.  I had just weaved a little white lie yarn in order to use an expired store credit, and apparently make aforementioned dude fall in love with me (just playing).  It turned out he used to work in the Park Slope location right near my old office.  See, how many of you know that much about that hipster-androgynophile folding deep V’s at American Apparel?

It put me at ease to just chat, not so much about the store or its products, especially because there was not that much of interest so it was taking me a while.  And when he did try to inspire my shopping decisions it was comments about what t-shirt his girlfriend wears to death and how sweet it would be to get a bag for $10.  No pressure!

So godspeed to you, kind Brooklynite – you make West 4th street a more personable and slightly better place.

P.S. This is what I got.  I might have to go back because I can’t decide if it’s good or bad. Thoughts?
